What is business blogging really?

Hear is the deep, hidden truth to what business blogging is really about 😉

Here’s something I’ve learned from running this blog now for 9 months…it’s much the same as what I’ve experienced in sales when I was out working in the field. Blogging is the highest paid hard work I can find, and it is the lowest paid easy work.

There is a lot of talk about how easy it is to be successful in internet marketing, blogging, etc. I haven’t seen that. You can certainly kick back and have an easy go of it. No one will ever push you. The world’s busy enough as it is, and if you sit on the sidelines then that’s fine. But if you want to get a significant result, the path to achieving that is going to require some work.

You will certainly get the result you’re seeking if you stick with it, and that is what’s so beautiful about blogging…you put yourself out there on a regular basis; it’s a learning process, and the more you learn, the more you earn. If you do the work, you get the result. I wouldn’t have it any other way…would you?

When it comes to blogging to market your small business or professional practice, it’s all about you. It’s not something that can be delegated…not if you want maximum impact. Clients have many times asked me to “do blogging” or “do social media” for them. I’ll be honest and admit I’ve done this in the past. I’ve been paid to ghost write and perform other tasks, and I did not find it was a win-win. I don’t do it anymore. Blogging is about engaging your audience personally. You can’t really do that if you’re not present. Can we agree on this?

Business blogging perk #1

Blogging for your business is extremely liberating. You don’t have to stay “in the box”. You can actually have fun with it. In fact, the more personality you can inject into your blog the better. What other form of marketing allows this level of personal input and creativity? As business owners, so many of us have become so uptight, feeling we must act a certain way or be something we’re not in order for clients or customers to buy from us or take us seriously.

Many would-be bloggers feel they must be good writers in order to be successful at blogging. The only people who worry about this are people who haven’t read a lot of popular blogs! Technically proficient writing is not a requirement, trust me 🙂

Blogging allows you to simply have fun, talk about what you do and make money all at the same time. In fact, blogging sort of requires that you have fun. Bored, stuffy bloggers tend to write boring, stuffy blogs…who the heck wants to read that?

Business blogging perk #2

There is no limit to what you can achieve. No ceiling. Isn’t that part of what attracts you to running your own business to begin with? Blog marketing fits hand in glove with that mentality…there is no limit to how many people you can reach, how engaged you can become with your audience and yes, how much you can earn. In fact, blogging typically opens up entirely new income opportunities to small business owners who are open to new ideas. New income opportunities that were never possible before…would you agree that’s a positive thing?

Business blogging perk #3

Writing a blog for your business requires introspection. Yeah, it’s work. But it’s work that pays a high dividend. People (mostly people who DON’T have experience blogging) worry and argue about the return on investment (ROI) of blogging. But what is the cost of running on a business model that doesn’t connect with your audience? How expensive is it to create and develop products or services that your tribe could care less about?

Blogging enables you to be intimately in touch with what your customers want and need. It allows you to test ideas and prove demand before you spend one hour or one dollar on product development. It can also let you know when you’re doing something wrong. By simply listening to your audience, you can be responsive and turn every day complaining customers into raving fans. Even if you don’t sell (why wouldn’t you?) on your blog, the savings can be extremely significant. How cool is it to be able to use such an inexpensive marketing tool and to get such a huge benefit from it?

Business blogging perk #4

Needless to say, blogging is very inexpensive to get started. Compare the rising costs to any traditional media advertising and the FALLING returns you’re experiencing from them (yeah I know; it’s like I have X-ray vision into your business right?), and you’ll not be surprised at all to see why so many small business owners and professionals are starting up blogs and getting otherwise involved in social media for business marketing purposes. Very low investment up front and significant financial returns, new income streams and savings down the road. I’m not a math whiz, but that kind of makes sense, no?

What is a business blog really?

  • It’s a platform you can use to record your thoughts and observations about your business.
  • You can use it to make offers…
  • build a customer list and
  • be personally engaged wtih a large number of people with only a small time commitment each day.

Is blogging a full time job? It could be, but it’s up to you. I personally spend only an hour or so on my blog each week. The rest of my time I spend networking, building my business. Is an hour a week a reasonable commitment to you for such a large return?

Do You Have What it Takes to Be a Success in Social Media?

What does it take to be successful in social media? I hope to offer you some helpful thoughts in this post. Let me know what you think!

I’ve spent time with a number of you by now. I’ve had a great chance to learn a lot about my own business and how to grow, but I’ve hopefully learned a bit about how I might be able to help as well. One thing I’ve encountered more than anything else is insecurity. A lot of people out there feel social media marketing for their business is not something that’s going to work for them. Sure it works for Gary Vaynerchuk, and it works for Brian Clark, and it works for Michael Martine, and it works for thousands of other business owners, but it’s not going to work for YOU.

If this sounds like you…if you feel you may not have what it takes to be successful using social media to grow your business, I’d encourage you to look at the facts.

Social Media For Business: Fact #1

A lot of my clients shy away from social media for business marketing, because they fear an exorbitant time commitment, but this is a huge misconception. Yes, you can waste time with social media…you can waste time doing ANYTHING. Fear of wasting time is not a reason to avoid a valuable tactic for growing your business…it’s simply a reason to make sure you do it effectively. Does this makes sense?

Social Media For Business: Fact #2

Social media is a constant learning experience. That’s what this is…a constant learning experience. It’s true for you and me, and it’s true for everyone out there. There is no such thing as a “social media expert”, and if you come across someone claiming to be one, run in the other direction. Someone who actually knows everything there is to know about social media…are you kidding me? Twitter has only been around for a very short time…there not been enough time for anyone to become an actual expert. Find people who’ve had success, people you want to model. Learn from them and find your own path.
One thing I’ve seen holding people back is the idea that they want to get everything figured out, and then they’ll dive in. It’s unlikely that will happen, because the platforms and rules are always changing. The way to get results is to just get started.

Social Media For Business: Fact #3

Social media is a magic bullet. A really slow bullet…

  • Can social media change your business inside out? Yes
  • Can social media open up new revenue streams you never even thought of? Yes
  • Can social media make you more effective, in less time than ever before? Yes
  • Can you accomplish all this in a short amount of time by paying someone else to “take care of it”? Nope.

If there is one concept that many people need but don’t like, it’s accountability. The success of Chris Brogan’s Trust Agents is a perfect testament to this phenomenon. Fact is, building a social media network means building trust. And trust is a funny little bugger. It simply cannot be manufactured. Can’t be done. It has to be built. One tweet at a time. One post at a time. One comment at a time.
I get asked to “do social media” for clients somewhat regularly. Yes, some clerical tasks can be delegated, but social engagement cannot be diverted to someone else. You’re either accessible to your community or you’re not. If you’re not, you’re missing out on huge opportunities, and social media tools allow you to leverage your time considerably, so you CAN be helpful and accessible to your audience. It’s a win-win.

Social Media For Business: Fact #4

You have what it takes! Can you do it? The answer is “yes” 🙂

  • It doesn’t require a high degree of techiness or nerdiness.
  • It doesn’t require knowledge of html, or any of that web programming crap. They have tools now that take care of all that.
  • It doesn’t require that you even know what Twitter is. Just a willingness to learn.
  • It doesn’t require that you have any expensive equipment. If you’re reading this article (unless someone printed it out for you, lol), you already have what it takes to get started and go quite far.

And here’s a bit of what it WILL require:

  • Paradigm shift, plus go ahead and put your seatbelt on, because you’ll have another total paradigm shift real soon. I experience one at least once a week.
  • A realistic budget. I really struggled with putting this on the list. If I’m being honest with you though, approaching a totally new and very dynamic marketing strategy and expecting to do it for free (as many do for some odd reason…go ask your local newspaper for a free ad, and see how far that gets you) is not a strategy I advise. Many of these tools are free to acquire. Acquisition is one thing. Effective implementation over the long term is an entirely different thing. Social media highly effective? Yes. Free? Not usually, unless you’re a veteran and highly, highly competent. And even the vets in this industry get help and use premium tools daily.
  • Time. Yes that’s right! Social media is not a space ad. You can’t slap something up and get results. It’s about networking, building relationships. Results will come, and they can blow your mind, but they will not come overnight.
  • Willingness to learn new skills, consistently.
  • Help. This relates to “realistic budget”, but not all help needs to come from an outside consultant. Much help can be obtained through free sources like online forums and reading other blogs. Looking to others for solutions…people outside your immediate organization, will need to become a regular event.

Can you afford to ignore the fact that almost all your customers are online looking for you already…talking about you? Stepping into the conversation is welcome and encouraged, and that’s all social media is in a nutshell. It’s just people talking.

Top 10 Myths and Mistakes About Blogging and Internet Marketing

As more and more of my peers in small business come online and start trying their hand at blogging and internet marketing, there are a number of common myths and mistakes that need to be addressed.

If you’re considering starting a blog or using social media to promote your small business, I applaud you. My goal for this post is to simply dispel some of the biggest lies, misunderstanding and obstacles I’ve come across that you will likely run into.

Hopefully you can use these as a way of saving yourself some time and get straight to the business of making your blog or website reach your goals.

  1. Internet marketing as an afterthought: It’s a great idea to put yourself in your customers’ shoes. For many business models (dare I say nearly ALL business models) a customer’s most common point of interaction with you is your website. Your internet presence should be given a proportional amount of your time and attention. Many businesses ironically spend very little time on internet marketing. They’ll have a site that gets thousands of visitors a month, but they do very little if anything to effectively engage them. Instead, they expect people to call them and wade through an automated phone system in order to get information. You may prefer to do business a certain way, but it’s likely that your customer would prefer your website to be a lot more usable. And it may interest you that if you help them out in this regard, they will likely reward you for it : ) Don’t let your internet marketing be something that you’re just trying to squeeze in. It needs to be as integrated into your business as your customers would like it to be.
  2. Let me just slam this website together. Let’s get this sucker DONE! This is a powerful myth and mistake many people make! Your internet marketing is an ongoing process. Think of it more as a dialog than anything else. When you walk away, the conversation stops. Ideally you want to be as active and engaged in your internet marketing as possible. Trying to crank out a website and then thinking that it’s going to keep pulling results for you without any additional effort is the wrong way of looking at it.
  3. Marketing online is not the same as traditional marketing: Traditional marketing is interruption-based, which means that advertisers have always concentrated on grabbing people’s attention however they can. Getting a response was key. In online marketing, people are already paying attention, so trying to cram a message in front of them is just rude. Cultivating a relationship with your visitors is hugely important. That’s why blogging is something I consider to be pretty much mandatory for most small business owners, because it enables you to communicate with a large number of people very effectively and in a personal manner. Applying traditional marketing methods to your internet marketing most often comes off badly for you. It’s important to embrace the fact that a social approach to your marketing, while it takes more time, really is going to be the best approach.
  4. Failing to build an email list: You want people to come out to your site, correct? And after they visit, you want them to come back. The number one way to get people coming back over and over again is by getting them to subscribe. And the number one way people subscribe is still via email. RSS is very convenient, but most readers still use email. If you’re not building your email list from day one, you’re missing out on a great opportunity. For email listing building tools and campaign management, I personally use Aweber and recommend you get in on that action as well.
  5. Failing to have a coach or someone on your team who specializes in new media: Let’s be real. You have a business to run. You’re not a SEO expert. You’re not a web designer. You’re not going to be. You don’t have time. Too many business owners try to do too much. Consult with someone from time to time. Get someone on your team, whether it’s an employee or a virtual assistant, a coach or whatever asset your most comfortable with, and use their expertise to make sure you’re being effective. Have them critique you and tell you where you can improve. Talk with someone whose job it is to stay on top of these things, and take their advice. You will be 100% more effective by not trying to do everything yourself.
  6. Focusing on design and SEO over content and communication: Everyone, especially business owners, want their site to look great. Yet look at some of the most successful blogs on the internet today, and not all of them look all that great. Why are they popular? How can you possibly create a winning online marketing plan without a $20k custom built website? Because believe it or not, all consumers really want is quality content. And they want it to come from you, because they care to know if you’re actually as cool as you want people to think you are. A glitzy website doesn’t impress many people any more. But quality, genuine content always will get the job done. What’s nice is that you can produce quality content for free. It just takes a little time and introspection. It’s highly worth it. Design is important, but content and quality interaction with your customers is WAY more valuable. It’s what your customers care about, so it’s what you should focus on.
  7. Spending too much time and money on marketing that doesn’t work: This one isn’t so much of an internet marketing thing as it is a business thing. So many of my friends in business are still locked into a mentality that they HAVE to pay for certain forms of marketing that they’ve always done in the past, even when they’re not pulling results anymore. On the flip side, I know some forward thinking business owners who have literally cut out their print advertising completely, and it has had NO negative effect on their business whatsoever. Obviously I’m not telling you specifically what to do with your specific business, but I urge you to look at the results your marketing is getting you. Are your customers flooding your websites, but meanwhile you’re still spending thousands a month on billboards and space ads? It happens a lot. If your advertising is not working, CUT IT! And put your money into your online business; it’s where your customers are most likely to find you anyway : )
  8. Not having fun: Fun is likely the most important element of this business. With all the options and tools at our disposal (blogs, websites, SEO, Twitter, Facebook, blah, blah, blah), it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But there’s an underlying opportunity here that most people seem to miss. You can do anything you want! You can literally make a great living doing anything you want, and as long as you’re willing to work like crazy you can do very well. Don’t become overwhelmed by your options; revel in them! Don’t be all stiff and proper with everything you do; have fun! With the amount of work that needs to be done, fun is mandatory. It also enables you to tackle the next step…
  9. Not diving in: There’s a lot of concern amongst business owners as to the value of Twitter, for example. I get a lot of comments regarding how it just doesn’t make sense. There is a reasonable concern over wasting time on something that is not going to produce results. Time is valuable, and that concern is prudent. However, things change quickly these days, and it’s important to act if you want to get results. Instead of using your lack of understanding as a gauge, I recommend using something else. Look at the value of the network. If there are millions of people all in one place, and the community is very active, there is a huge amount of value there, and it’s a good idea to tap into it. Dive in. Trust me, after you’ve spent some time conversing with people on Twitter (or any valuable community), it will make more sense. And so it goes with the internet in general, the biggest community of all. Being committed to getting results is key to actually getting results. Being tentative with your internet marketing endeavors will only ever produce tentative results. Don’t focus on what you don’t know. Yes, there are things to learn, but the most important thing is to dive in.
  10. Wanting results fast and automatically: I can’t blame anyone for wanting to get turnkey results from their internet marketing work. But it’s essential to measure your results properly. Measuring results from a blog or a social media profile in the same way that you measure results from a space ad you run in a magazine is not going to make you a happy camper. It doesn’t work the same way, and it doesn’t produce the same kind of results. Measure results using web analytics. Measure results via how many subscribers you’re getting and how many of them are buying from you. The details of this are certainly a topic for another post, but to suffice for now, don’t set up a blog and expect the orders to start pouring in automatically. Trust me, there are many points of data that you can use to keep your analytical mind more than pleased with the results you’re getting. Results are trackable using new media. But setting up a website and then sitting back and waiting for the money to start rolling in is going to lead only to disappointment.

Using new media is a little interesting…you basically cannot ignore this shift in the way of doing business. You really can’t. You have to learn to use these tools, and learning to use them is basically going to force you to rethink a lot about your business, how you measure results, etc.

How to Use Twitter Professionally

It’s fairly clear how Twitter can be cool for personal use, correct? Friends follow each other and communicate via 140 characters or less. It’s a slightly more social version of texting. When it comes to business, it gets more complicated, because we have sales goals. We want to sell things. We want to make money. So how can you use Twitter to make money?

Here’s the thing, if making money directly on Twitter is your goal, you will be best served to simply stay away. Twitter can absolutely be a big part of your internet presence, but direct money-making goals aren’t gonna fly in this arena. Sorry.

The Novice Approach

I understand there’s a lot of novices (some of them are just fools, but most simply don’t know what they’re doing) out there, and they’re setting up multiple Twitter profiles, blasting out direct sales messages all day long. Most of these sales messages contain affiliate links or links to sales pages they’ve created. Perhaps they’ve invested in some course that guaranteed them that by doing this they’d make $10,000 a month on Twitter. I don’t know. The point is that this is not the purpose of Twitter, and by doing this they’re only making themselves a nuisance. It’s like going to a huge party and instead of going inside to hang, these people flier everyone’s windshield and leave. It’s rude. It creates no value, only litter. And it does not create a professional impression for them or their company. Also, it’s not effective. All those fliers end up in the trash.

How the Pros Do it

So how do you conduct yourself professionally on Twitter when you’re trying to run a business? The key is to embrace the social aspect of this huge network of people. The fact is that most people on Twitter are good people. It’s a party, and you’re invited. This analogy of course has been used before, but it’s true. Don’t flier the cars, just go inside and have fun.

How can this possibly bring in more business? Since when is networking not a good way of drumming up business? It’s age old…it’s a legacy way of getting new business. It’s proven; it’s effective. It works! But you don’t walk into a networking function or a gathering of any kind and just start pinning your business card to everyone’s lapel. You talk to people. Your business is what you do all day. Trust me, it’s gonna come up! How many new people have you ever met in real life who didn’t eventually ask what you do for a living? It usually comes up in your first conversation. Twitter is the same. Don’t forget that social rules have not changed just because our modes of communication have evolved a bit.

The way you conduct yourself professionally on Twitter is the same way you’d conduct yourself at any other social event in real life. Very simple, I know. But simple is good, right? Social networking is a huge way to leverage and expand your internet presence, drive traffic to your site and get new business. Conduct yourself professionally, and you will do well.

100 Awesome Blog Tips Articles to Take Your Blogging to the Next Level

These are articles I’ve read recently that I found particularly valuable. They are all from blogs I read regularly. As someone who writes a blog, I know it is also essential to read a lot of blogs. I get questions from professionals and business owners about how to get started blogging, and this is always one of the first things I say: read blogs!

This is the number one way to learn what works, what doesn’t and what YOU want to write about. I recommend anyone interested in blogging should spend a month or so just reading other blogs. Subscribe, comment, spend some real time. Do this specifically in the space you want to occupy. For example, if you want to write a blog about real estate in your particular market area, search people up and find out who’s already active in your niche. Subscribe to their blog, comment them, read plenty of articles. Take note of the design of their sites. Who is hosting these sites? What things do you like, dislike, and what can you improve upon?

Spend time reading, paying attention first

Spending time reading and interacting on other blogs will help you develop your own blogging voice, and your own blogging voice is one of the most essential elements to any successful blog. For my own personal space, I obviously read a lot about blogging itself. Throughout my research I’ve accumulated a lot of awesome blog tips I’ve been wanting to share with you.
